THE SUMMER SINGS

The Summer Sings are run over 7 weeks on Monday nights at North Curry Village Hall.  We meet at 7.00pm and sing for 2 hours.  After five or ten minutes to register and get settled, we commence with a short warm up before we get into learning the main song for the evening.  We break at around 8pm for five to ten minutes, and often singers bring snacks or drinks to share but don't feel like you must - we don't break for long.  We always finish roughly on time at 9pm, allowing for finishing singing the last song through, of course.

The songs are all in four-part harmony and taught by ear.  You don't need to read music to take part.  We don't give out a score and ask you to sing by sight; instead the songs are all taught by call and response - the leader sings a line and you sing it back.  You won't be asked to audition, everyone is welcome, and neither will you be asked to perform a solo.  When you come first time you'll be given a song sheet which has all the lyrics to all the songs we'll be singing.

If you don't know what part you are, don't worry, there will be all sorts of knowledgeable and friendly type people around who can help you and steer you to the right section.

Like previous years, I'm planning to cover four big songs (performance pieces about three or four minutes long) as well as some others that we'll learn and sing together for the sheer enjoyment of it.   The songs will be easy to learn, fun 'poppy' type tunes - that'll be popular with the audience too.  I'll publish a teaching plan here, so you know what we're planning to do in each session. Last year's songs were:
  • Celebration (Kool and the Gang)
  • Imagine (John Lennon)
  • Sweet Talkin' Guy (The Chiffons)
  • Movin' On Up (Primal Scream)
As soon as the Winter Sing has been held, you'll be able to register to join the Scratch Choir this summer.  Watch this space!
